Council Member Elizabeth S. Crowley called upon the Department of Environmental Protection to address the persistent street flooding along Edsall Avenue in Glendale by installing an additional catch basin on the street.
The street revitalization and beautification project that is currently underway between 71st Place and 73rd Place highlighted the need for increased drainage on both the north and south sides of the street. Currently, all five blocks drain into a single basin, which consistently creates puddles of standing water along the residential block.
These conditions are unsanitary and a hazard to public health. During warm weather, standing water serves as a breeding ground for mosquitoes- of which Queens has seen a proliferation in recent months. In order to protect residents of Glendale from the nuisance and health hazards mosquitos carry, it is critical that an additional catch basin be installed along Edsall Avenue.
Council Member Elizabeth S. Crowley said, “As part of the Edsall Avenue cleanup project, it is important that we address the lack of proper drainage along this street. Another catch basin is a simple, yet critical fix that will improve the quality of life here and prevent health issues in the future.”
In 2008 Council Member Elizabeth Crowley was elected to represent the 30th Council District covering the Glendale, Maspeth, Middle Village, Richmond Hill, Ridgewood, and Woodhaven neighborhoods. Elizabeth was the first female and first Democrat elected to represent that seat. She has chaired the Fire & Criminal Justice Services Committee since January 2010 which oversees the Fire Department, Department of Correction, Department of Probation, and Criminal Justice Coordinator’s Office.
