PS 91 has been approved by the Department of Education (DOE) for additional full-day universal pre-kindergarten seats for the 2013-2014 school year, Council Member Elizabeth Crowley announced. The DOE’s universal pre-kindergarten program gives children the tools they need for future academic success and is provided free of charge to all students. Commuters throughout the City who have been subject to harmful secondhand smoke at City bus shelters will soon get a reprieve. The seniority protections ATU Local 1181 members are fighting for have been included since 1979, and regularly used by the City for other contracts. “The City’s first priority must be keeping our schoolchildren safe, and that begins and ends with...

City Council’s Efforts to Keep Firehouses Fully Staffed Help Spur Record Low Fire Fatalities in New York City

Fire fatalities in New York City were a record low in 2012. The City recorded 58 deaths from fires, down from 66 in 2011. The new record was met thanks to the exceptional work of the members of the FDNY. Demand for Fire Department services is also at an all-time high, according to FDNY Commissioner Salvatore Cassano, which is one of the main reasons the City Council has fought to keep firehouses completely staffed and operational during budget negotiations, despite the administration’s insistence on closing firehouses. “Our fire department is the City’s first line of defense in any...
